Pine Island Florida

Pine Island Florida

A Very Special Retreat!

Pine Island Florida, affectionately called Florida’s Creative Coast is only 30 minutes from Fort Myers, but is a world apart from the hustle bustle of the city.

When you drive onto the island you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time to a different era.

If you can stay until sunset, you’ll see spectacular sunsets.

Bokeelia View

There is a laid back, island atmosphere and is truly Florida’s best kept secret.

It is the largest island on the West Coast of Florida, measuring 17 miles long. It is protected by the barrier islands of Sanibel, Captiva, North Captiva and Cayo Costa.

Pine Island Florida

Because of it’s location behind the other islands, and separated from the Gulf of Mexico, there are no real beaches on Pine Island.

This island is the only island off Florida that has remained rural, with no traffic lights or high rise buildings. Perhaps this is the case because of the lack of beaches.

But there’s no shortage of water here. There is Charlotte Harbor at the north end, Pine Island Sound and San Carlos Bay. The fishing is great! Many folks who come to vacation here, decide they love the island lifestyle and end up moving here.

The Communities of Pine Island Florida

There are 5 distinct communities on Pine Island Florida.  The shopping on Pine Island consists of one-of-a-kind boutiques and galleries.  While you’re on Pine Island shopping and exploring, stop at one of the great restaurant on the island.

Matlacha Florida is the first community you come to as you drive onto the island. Matlacha is a quirky, Key West style village with funky island wear and gift boutiques, art galleries, small motels, seafood restaurants, bait shops, small marinas, a seafood store and a bar.

Bokeelia Florida is at the northern end and has many single family homes, both waterfront and non-waterfront and low rise condominiums. Bokeelia has many of the tree, plant and fruit growers, a couple of restaurants,an art and gift gallery and a magnificent water view.

Pineland, which is on the western side of the island, has a golf course, a small marina, and single family homes. It’s proud to be the site of many Calusa Indian shell mounds.

St. James City Florida is on the southern end and has mostly single family homes, many on canals. There are a couple of casual restaurants and a small marina. The majority of the population resides in St. James City.

Pine Island Center is basically in the center of the island. Here is the main intersection of Stringfellow Road and Pine Island Road. This is where most of the commercial activity takes place. There is a strip mall with a supermarket, lighted tennis courts, a park with a pool, a ball field, a library, , medical and dental facilities, the island’s primary fire station with EMS services as well as a few restaurants.

We’ll be exploring each of these communities with lots of pictures.
